石川県 · 能美市

Spring Day Shrine, located in the scenic city of Katsuragi on the southern coast of Honshu, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu. As one of the oldest shrines in Japan, it dates back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE). The shrine's main hall was rebuilt in 1632 during the Edo period, and its current architecture reflects the distinctive Katsuragi-style, featuring a vermilion torii gate adorned with intricately carved wooden beams. The shrine is also known for its beautiful garden and traditional Japanese architecture.

Cultural notes

In addition to its connection to the sun goddess Amaterasu, Spring Day Shrine is also revered for its association with the 'tsukimi,' or moon viewing, a traditional Japanese custom where people gather to admire the beauty of the full moon. During the month of October, the shrine hosts a 'tsukimi' festival, featuring traditional food, games, and performances.

Historical note

The shrine was originally founded as the 'Tsukimi-jinsha' in the Heian period, but its current name, Spring Day Shrine, was given during the Edo period.
