石切鶴岡神社

Yamagata

Located in the heart of Zao-san, Stone Cut Crane Mountain in Yamagata Prefecture, Zao-ichi Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of agriculture and fertility. The shrine's main building was constructed during the Heian period (794-1185 CE), while the stone statue of the crane, which gives the shrine its name, dates back to the Kamakura period (1185-1333 CE). According to legend, a crane appeared in a dream to the shrine's founder, guiding him to this sacred site. The shrine is also famous for its unique 'stone-cutting' method, where the mountain's natural rock formations were carefully cut and shaped to create the intricate stone statues that adorn the shrine grounds.
