located in the heart of Yamagata Prefecture, Hakuunji Taisha is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu and the storm god Susanoo, with a rich history dating back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE). The shrine's current structure dates back to the Edo period (1603-1867 CE), but its origins are rooted in the ancient Yamato kingdom.

Cultural notes
As one of Japan's 81 official Shinto shrines, Hakuunji Taisha is particularly significant for its association with the legendary founder of Yamato, Prince Nintoku, who is said to have founded the city of Yamagata and established the shrine as a sacred site. The shrine also hosts an annual festival in May, which features traditional dances, food stalls, and offerings to the kami.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 2004.
