松尾神社

Tochigi

Matsuo Shrine, located in the town of Kawachi in Tochigi Prefecture, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami of the forest, water, and fertility. Its origins date back to the Kamakura period (1185-1333), with the current main hall built during the Edo period (1603-1867). The shrine is famous for its beautiful autumn foliage and traditional architecture.

Visitor tip

Visit the shrine during the autumn leaves season to see the changing colors of the forest. Bring a small gift of fruit or sake to make an offering at the torii gate.

Cultural notes

The shrine is dedicated to the Matsuo no Okami, the kami of the forest and fertility. It is also known for its traditional 'tsutsuji-zukuri' style architecture, featuring a large stone lantern with a distinctive pointed roof. During the autumn leaves season, the shrine hosts a festival to honor the arrival of autumn.

Historical note

Founded in 1191 by Takeda Shigefusa, a samurai from the Matsuo clan.
