男山八幡神社

Located in the Akita Prefecture, 男山八幡神社 is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami of Mount Iwaki and the Bodhisattva of Compassion, Nyoho-nyoho no Kami. The shrine's history dates back to the early Heian period (794-1185 CE), during which time it was an important center for Buddhist learning and culture. Over time, the shrine has undergone several transformations, reflecting the changing fortunes of Japan.

Cultural notes

This shrine is known for its unique 'tsukubai' water basin, where visitors wash their hands before approaching the shrine. The shrine also hosts an annual autumn festival, which features traditional dances and offerings to the kami.

The shrine was rebuilt in 1607 following a devastating fire that destroyed the previous structures.
