Tochigi

Highgate Shrine, located in the Tochigi prefecture, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Tametora-kami, a Shinto kami believed to protect travelers and traders. The shrine's architecture is typical of the Edo period, with a large torii gate and a rectangular prayer hall. Highgate Shrine is also notable for its association with the legend of 'Aya no Umi,' a mythical sea goddess who was said to have been born from the waters of Lake Chuzenji, near Tochigi.

Cultural notes

In addition to Tametora-kami, Highgate Shrine is also said to enshrine kami associated with prosperity and good fortune for merchants and traders. The shrine's annual 'Aya Matsuri' festival honors the mythical sea goddess Aya no Umi, while the 'Kiyohime Matsuri' festival celebrates the legend of a heroine who saved her village from an evil spirit.
