活汲神社

Located in the scenic town of Kutchan, Hokkaido's northernmost tip, 活汲神社 (Aktan-gami-jinja) is a small Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami Aktan-gami, believed to be the guardian spirit of the village and its people. The shrine's unique architecture reflects its seaside location, with wooden torii gates situated along the shoreline.

Visitor tip

To fully appreciate the shrine's coastal setting, visit at low tide to explore the rocks and tidal pools below the torii gates.

Cultural notes

Aktan-gami is believed to have the power to calm storms and bring good fishing luck. During the Kutchan Winter Festival in February, visitors can experience a unique festival celebrating the local seafood, with traditional dances and food stalls.

Historical note

The current main hall was built in 1871, during the Meiji period, replacing an earlier structure.
