Located in the heart of Nagano Prefecture, Hachiman Shrine at Sakata is one of Japan's most famous Shinto shrines dedicated to the god of war, Hachiman. The shrine was originally built in 711 CE during the Nara period as a temple but was later converted into a Shinto shrine in the Edo period. It enshrines the kami of protection and divine guidance.
