雷神宮天満宮

Ibaraki

Located in the prefecture of Ibaraki, 雷神宮天満宮 is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami of storm and lightning, Raigetsu, as well as the god of harvest and fertility, Amaterasu Ōmikami. The shrine's name reflects its dual role as a sanctuary for both the storm-god and the sun goddess. Visitors can explore the shrine's traditional architecture, including its iconic torii gate and honden, which houses the main shrine hall.

Visitor tip

When visiting on April 27th, be sure to attend the Cherry Blossom Viewing Festival (Hanami), which celebrates the blooming of the sakura trees in the shrine's gardens.

Cultural notes

This shrine is known for its unique architectural style, which blends traditional Shinto elements with elements inspired by Japanese folklore. The shrine's grounds also feature a number of mythological creatures and deities from Japanese mythology, including the tengu, a mythical bird-like creature said to inhabit the mountains surrounding Ibaraki.

Historical note

The shrine was established in 1554 during the Sengoku period, but its current form dates back to the Edo era.
