Located in the city of Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Jotoiwa Shrine is dedicated to the Shinto deity Inari Okami, known as Jotoiwa in Japanese. As one of the oldest shrines in Japan, it is believed to have been founded during the Nara period (710-794 CE). The shrine's architecture reflects its long history, with a series of wooden structures built on top of each other, eventually topped by a tiled-roof hall dedicated to Inari.

Visitor tip
To fully appreciate the shrine's historic atmosphere, visit early in the morning or late in the evening when the sun is not directly overhead, and the wooden structures are bathed in soft natural light.

Jotoiwa Shrine is known for its unique architectural style, which blends traditional Shinto elements with regional influences. The shrine is also famous for its rice offering ceremony, where visitors can participate by offering sacred sake to Inari Okami. During the autumn harvest season, locals perform a special festival in honor of Jotoiwa, known as the 'Akematsu Matsuri'.
