熊野神社

Iwate

Kūrō Jinja, a Shinto shrine dedicated to the deity Kūro, is located in the city of Mutsu, Iwate Prefecture. The shrine is situated at the foot of Mount Sannakita, which is said to be the dwelling place of the kami. According to legend, Kūrō was a messenger of the storm god Raijin who fell in love with a local woman and decided to stay on earth. Over time, the shrine has evolved into a sacred site for worship, purification, and protection against natural disasters.

Visitor tip

To avoid harsh winds, it's best to visit the shrine early in the morning or later in the afternoon when the sun is not directly overhead.

Cultural notes

Kūrō Jinja is associated with the mythology of Raijin, the storm god, and is believed to offer protection against lightning and storms. The shrine also hosts an annual festival, the Matsuri no Hi, which celebrates the founding of the shrine and features traditional dances, music, and food stalls.
