Visitor tip
To purify yourself before visiting the shrine, take a dip in the nearby Abi River or wash your hands at one of the many temizuya water purification stations found throughout the shrine grounds.
Cultural notes
In Japanese culture, the number eight is considered sacred and auspicious, reflecting the shrine's name. Visitors may participate in the annual Eight-Day Festival (Hachijubasetsu), which honors Tora no Kami with offerings of sake, rice, and prayers for good fortune and prosperity.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt after being destroyed by fire in 1868 during the Meiji Restoration period.
