Cultural notes
Hime Island Shrine is connected to the legend of Urashima Taro, a fisherman who was granted three visits to the underwater palace of the Dragon King. The shrine's main deity, Hime- no-Mori-kami, is believed to be the kami of rice and fertility that Urashima Taro worshiped during his visits.
Historical note
The shrine was established in 1185 during the Kamakura period as a branch shrine of the Shitennō-ji Temple in Osaka.
