Omisaka Shrine, located in the heart of Omi Province's capital city of Omihachiman, is a revered Shinto site dedicated to the kami of the region. Dedicated to the shrine's eponymous deity, the god of the mountain and the surrounding area, it is believed that the shrine was built during the Heian period (794-1185). The shrine has been rebuilt several times due to fires and wars, with its current structure dating back to the Edo period (1603-1867).

Cultural notes

Omisaka Shrine is closely tied to the mythology of the region. According to local legend, the shrine was built by an empress who had traveled from the capital city to pray for a successful harvest. As she walked through the mountains, she noticed the majestic beauty of the surrounding peaks and decided to build a shrine in honor of the mountain kami.
