Cultural notes
Hatsuse is said to be the Shinto manifestation of the wind god. According to legend, Hatsuse descended from heaven in an oxhide, bringing rain to the barren land. The shrine's most famous festival is the Hatsuse Matsuri, which takes place in autumn and features a parade with a giant statue of Hachiman.
Historical note
Founded during the Nara period (710-794 CE), the shrine was originally known as Sato-no-yashiro, and its primary deity was later changed to Hachiman.
