Tochigi

Cultural notes

As a major shrine for Inari Okami, Utsunomiya Shrine is famous for its numerous fox statues ( Kitsune) throughout the grounds, which are revered for their magical powers and association with fertility. The shrine also hosts an annual festival in November, where visitors can enjoy traditional performances and food stalls.

Historical note

The shrine was founded during the reign of Emperor Tenji in 678 CE.
