Located in the city of Bizen, Okayama Prefecture, Uge-Okami Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami Okami no Okami, also known as Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu's brother or father. It is one of Japan's oldest shrines, dating back to 711 AD. The shrine is famous for its wooden main hall and the legend surrounding the founding by Emperor Temmu.

Visitor tip
Visit the shrine at dawn or dusk to witness the beautiful sunrise or sunset, and consider making an offering of sake to the kami for a good harvest.
Cultural notes
Uge-Okami Shrine is closely connected to the legend of Okami no Okami, who was said to have been summoned by Emperor Temmu to protect him from illness. The shrine also celebrates the New Year (Shogatsu) and the Star Festival (Tanabata).
