Located in Kyoto, the Shimokitazawa Shrine is a Shinto temple dedicated to the god of learning and poetry, Ōkuninushi. The shrine is known for its beautiful gardens and historic architecture. It is believed to be established during the Edo period, with the current main hall dating back to 1636.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes

The Shimokitazawa Shrine is famous for its association with the legendary poet and philosopher, Ōshū Bukku. According to myth, the god Ōkuninushi granted Bukku the power of poetry after he had defeated a giant snake in battle.
