Cultural notes
Asamaya Shrine is associated with the legendary Japanese ghost story, 'The Tale of the 47 Ronin,' which takes place in the nearby town of Hitachi. The shrine's Fujin Ryujin kami is said to be responsible for guiding the spirits of the ronin.
Historical note
The shrine has been rebuilt multiple times due to wars and fires, with the current structure dating back to the Edo period (1603-1867 CE).
