Cultural notes
Fushimi Inari Shrine is famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates that form a tunnel up the mountain. This unique structure is said to symbolize the connection between heaven and earth, as well as the unity of all people. During the New Year (Oshogatsu) festival, visitors write wishes on paper lanterns and hang them on the gates.
Historical note
The current shrine was rebuilt in 1922 after being damaged in a fire during World War II.
