Cultural notes

As a Shinto shrine dedicated to maritime protection, Ryuzenji Temple is said to be particularly revered by fishermen and sailors. Locals believe that the shrine's kami, Ryujin (Dragon God), watches over them from the sea. During the annual 'Sumo Festival' held in April, participants reenact ancient naval battles as part of their rituals.

Historical note

The Ryuzenji Temple was originally built in 718 CE during the Nara period, making it one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines. The shrine has undergone several renovations and expansions throughout its history, with notable changes occurring during the Edo period.
