This ancient shrine is dedicated to Emperor Sutoku, one of Japan's most famous vengeful spirits (onryō), who was exiled to Sanuki Province (modern Kagawa) after the Hōgen Rebellion of 1156. Worshippers come here seeking protection from curses and misfortune, as well as to appease the powerful spirit of the emperor who died in exile filled with resentment. The shrine serves as an important site for pacifying vengeful spirits and demonstrates the Shinto practice of transforming potentially harmful deities into protective ones through proper veneration.
