Abe no Seimei has become a legendary figure in Japanese folklore, appearing in numerous novels, films, and manga as a master of supernatural powers. The pentagram (seiman) symbol associated with him represents the five elements of Chinese philosophy and is believed to ward off evil spirits.
Historical note
Established in 1007 on the former site of Abe no Seimei's residence by Emperor Ichijo to honor the great onmyoji after his death. Abe no Seimei (921-1005) served the imperial court for over 40 years, using his knowledge of astronomy, calendar-making, and divination to advise emperors and nobles. The shrine was rebuilt several times throughout history.
