Dan-no-ura Inari Shrine, located in the town of Matsushima in Miyagi Prefecture, is a revered Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of rice, fertility, and prosperity. The shrine's name 'Dan-no-ura' refers to the famous naval battle during the Genpei War, where the forces of Minamoto no Yoshitsune defeated those of Taira no Kiyomori in 1185.

Visitor tip

To experience the serene beauty of the shrine, visit during the Cherry Blossom season ( late March to early April) when the surrounding park is adorned with stunning sakura trees.

Cultural notes

Dan-no-ura Inari Shrine is known for its unique architectural style, which blends traditional Shinto elements with those of Edo-period Japan. The shrine's main hall features a striking gabled roof and a wooden vermillion gate, while the surrounding park is famous for its 'matsushima' rock formations, which are said to resemble three ancient Buddhist statues.

Historical note

The shrine was originally built in 1198 by the Minamoto clan and has since been rebuilt several times due to fires and other disasters.
