Cultural notes

As one of the few shrines dedicated to the kami of agriculture in Miyagi Prefecture, Eight Clouds Shrine plays an important role in local agricultural rituals and festivals. The shrine is also associated with the mythological figure of Ryujin, the dragon god of the sea.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in the Heian period (794-1185 CE) after an earthquake destroyed the original structure.
