Cultural notes
Matsushima Tenjin Shrine is connected to the legend of Matsushima, a group of islands off the coast of Sendai where a young boy saved a ship from sinking by using his knowledge of the sea. The shrine is also famous for its beautiful 'Five Beautiful Islands' (Goshiki), which are said to be the physical manifestations of Matsushima's spirit.
