Located in Akita Prefecture, Dayu Hachiman-jinja Shrine is dedicated to the Shinto god of war and wisdom, Hachiman, as well as other deities, including Yamabiko, Okami, and Utsutsi. The shrine's architecture reflects the Heian period (794-1185 CE), with a traditional Japanese-style main hall and a vermilion torii gate. Dayu Hachiman-jinja Shrine is also famous for its 'Hachibei' or 'eight-bearded' statue of Hachiman, which is said to be one of the oldest in Japan.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes
As an important Shinto shrine in northern Japan, Dayu Hachiman-jinja Shrine is associated with regional mythology and folklore. The shrine's festival, Toshigami Matsuri, takes place on December 1st and features traditional performances, food stalls, and a grand parade.
