Open Tateyama Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Niigata Prefecture, dedicated to the god of agriculture and fertility, Tateyama, as well as the local deity, Tako, the sea dragon. The shrine's architecture reflects its location at the foot of Mount Tateyama, with a main hall designed to evoke the mountain's grandeur. Visitor tip

Cultural notes

As a coastal shrine, Open Tateyama Shrine is believed to have strong connections with the mythological sea creature, Tako, said to reside off the coast of Niigata Prefecture. The shrine also hosts an annual festival dedicated to the deity, Tateyama, which features traditional games and entertainment.

Historical note

The shrine was founded in 1605 as a way to honor the memory of the Takeda clan.
