Woodcutter's Shrine, located in the town of Minami-Shirotori, Niigata Prefecture, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of the forest and woodcutting, Hachiman. The shrine was built during the Heian period (794-1185 CE) and features a unique architectural style known as 'tsukubai' or 'bathing stone,' where visitors can wash their hands and mouth in the sacred waters before entering the main hall.

Visitor tip

Historical note
The shrine has been rebuilt several times due to natural disasters, including a devastating flood in 1629 CE.
