Cultural notes
Kamonno Shrine is famous for its association with the legendary bear spirit of Okuninushi, a powerful kami said to have created agriculture and fertility in Japan. During the spring festival, visitors can participate in rituals to honor the bear spirit and seek blessings for the new growing season.
Historical note
The shrine was originally built in 718 AD by Emperor Shomu, who declared Buddhism illegal in Japan and turned his attention to Shintoism.
