Mikasago Shrine, located in the city of Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, is one of Japan's oldest shrines, dating back to the Nara period (710-794 CE). Dedicated to the deity Susanohime, it is known for its unique architecture and rich cultural heritage. The shrine complex features a large torii gate, traditional Japanese gardens, and numerous altars dedicated to various kami.

Visitor tip
To appreciate the shrine's serene atmosphere, visit early in the morning or late in the evening when the sun is not too high, and take a stroll through the traditional Japanese gardens.
Cultural notes
Mikasago Shrine is famous for its 'tsukubai' water basin, believed to be used by Susanohime to purify her hands before performing rituals. The shrine also hosts an annual festival called 'Susanoo no Hi' in November, honoring the sea god Susanoo.

The shrine was originally built in 718 CE during the reign of Emperor Shomu.
