Cultural notes
Three Island Shrine is closely tied to the mythology of the Japanese sun goddess Amaterasu. According to legend, the shrine's founder was said to have been granted a vision by Amaterasu herself, leading him to build the shrine on this sacred site. The shrine also hosts an annual festival in June, called the 'Sakaki Festival', which involves the burning of sacred trees and ritual dances.
