Ibaraki

The sixth heaven shrine, located in the prefecture of Ibaraki, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami of heaven and the divine realm. The shrine's architecture reflects its origins as a rural temple, with a traditional Japanese-style wooden gate and vermilion torii gate. The grounds are said to be the site where the famous poet Ariwara no Narihira was born.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes

The shrine is associated with the mythological deity Tenjin, who was revered as a patron of learning and literature. In the spring, visitors can attend the annual festival in honor of Narihira's birth, which features traditional music, dance, and food.

Historical note

The shrine was established during the Heian period (794-1185 CE), but its current structure dates back to the Edo period (1603-1867 CE).
