The shrine is dedicated to the god of thunder, Raijū, and is famous for its beautiful gardens, traditional architecture, and vibrant festivals. The shrine's architecture reflects the Heian period (794-1185 CE) with its wooden buildings and tiled roofs.

Cultural notes

Kōzan-ji Temple is associated with the legend of the great earthquake that occurred in 1498 CE, which was said to have been caused by Raijū's anger. The shrine also hosts an annual festival called the 'Kamakura Sengen', which celebrates the god's divine power and protection.

Historical note

The shrine was built in 1185 CE by Minamoto no Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura shogunate.
