Located in the heart of Japan's snow-capped mountains, Ōi-sanji Hōshi no Miyako Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami (spirits) that inhabit the surrounding landscape. This unique shrine is nestled within the ancient forest of Dainichi-garaku, said to be the site of an ancient ritual site and spiritual gathering place for local communities.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes

Ōi-sanji Hōshi no Miyako Shrine is closely tied to the mythology of the Niigata region, where it is believed that the god of rice and fertility, Ryujin, once rested. Locals still perform traditional rituals and ceremonies to ensure bountiful harvests and good fortune.

Historical note

The shrine was originally built in the Edo period as a temporary structure but has undergone many renovations and restorations over time.
