Located in the heart of Sapporo, Otaru's neighboring city of Sappyo (Sapporo in Japanese), is the humble shrines of諏訪神社. This Shinto shrine has been worshiping to the kami, Okuninushi, for centuries. Its history dates back to 1677, and its architecture reflects the traditional styles of Hokkaido's early settlers.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes
諏訪神社 is known for its unique architectural feature - a wooden torii gate carved with the image of a bear, symbolizing Okuninushi's protection over the region. The shrine also participates in the annual Sapporo Cherry Blossom Festival.
Historical note
The shrine was re-established in 1889 after a fire destroyed the previous structure.
