Cultural notes
Tsushima Shrine is associated with the local legend of the 'tsukisabaki', a mythical figure said to have been created from the island itself. The shrine is also known for its beautiful festivals, including the 'Izu Tsushima Shrine Festival' held in September which features traditional music and dance performances.
Historical note
The shrine was established in 718 CE during the Nara period, making it one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan.
