Outū-ja Shrine, located in the Niigata Prefecture, is dedicated to the kami Inari Okami and other local deities. The shrine's architecture is characteristic of the Nara period, with a simple yet elegant design featuring a wooden torii gate. Visitors can walk along the shrine's pathways, known as 'omote,' which are lined with vermilion lanterns and blooming cherry blossoms in spring. The shrine also features an impressive stone Buddha statue, symbolizing protection and blessings.

Visitor tip
To avoid long lines, visit the shrine early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sun is not directly overhead.
Cultural notes
In addition to Inari Okami, the shrine also honors other local kami such as Ōnuma-tsurugi-gami and Shinto goddesses associated with rice and fertility. The shrine's New Year (Oshogatsu) festival features a traditional sake barrel-breaking ceremony and the offering of sake to the deities.
