Located in the heart of the Ibaraki Peninsula, Okatsumiya Inari Shrine is one of the oldest shrines dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice, fertility, and prosperity. Dedicated to the region's agricultural heritage, the shrine has played a vital role in maintaining the local economy through the centuries. As visitors approach the shrine, they are greeted by the majestic stone torii gates adorned with fluttering orange prayer flags, signifying good fortune and wishes.

Cultural notes

The shrine is famous for its numerous fox shrines dedicated to Inari’s patronage over the local farming community. In addition, Okatsumiya Inari Shrine hosts an annual summer festival (Matsuri) in mid-August, celebrating the harvest season and Inari's role as a guardian of prosperity.

Founded during the Nara period (710-794 CE), Okatsumiya Inari Shrine has been a place of worship for over 1,200 years.
