松尾神社

Shiga

Located in the town of Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture, Matsuo Shrine is one of Japan's oldest and most revered shrines, dedicated to the Sun Goddess Amaterasu. Dating back to the Nara period (710-794 CE), the shrine is a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage. Its traditional architecture, featuring a curved roof and wooden pillars, reflects the Heian style of construction popular during this time. The shrine grounds are home to numerous vermilion torii gates, adding to its striking appearance.

Cultural notes

Matsuo Shrine is associated with the myth of Amaterasu's descent into the underworld, where she was rescued by her brother Susa-no-o. The shrine also plays host to the annual 'Obon' festival, honoring the spirits of one's ancestors, in July. Locals believe that the shrine's proximity to Lake Biwa, Japan's largest freshwater lake, brings good luck and prosperity.

Historical note

Founded in 730 CE by Emperor Shomu as part of his nationwide project to establish new shrines dedicated to Amaterasu.
