The Upper Country Nakatomi Twelve Deities Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture, but was originally established in the Hie area of Kyoto (now part of Kamigaya). The shrine enshrines twelve deities from Japanese mythology. It is believed to have been built during the Edo period. The shrine is famous for its beautiful architecture and peaceful atmosphere.

Visitor tip
Visitors can pray for good luck, wealth, and health at the torii gate, but be prepared for a long walk up the steep path leading to the shrine.
Cultural notes
The shrine is famous for its beautiful architecture, including a five-story pagoda. It is also believed to have connections to the Japanese mythological figure of Ryujin, the dragon god, and the twelve deities enshrined here are believed to be associated with various aspects of life such as prosperity, good fortune, and longevity.
