Cultural notes
As one of Japan's most ancient shrines, the Shrine of Izumo is said to be connected to the mythological figure of Izumo Takamaru, a legendary hero who is believed to have defeated the Chinese pirates known as the 'Pirata no Tsuki' in the 8th century. The shrine is also famous for its wooden torii gate, which is believed to be one of the oldest and largest in Japan.
