Ibaraki

Located in the prefecture of Ibaraki, Sanjo-ya (also known as Sanjo Shrine) is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the worship of three primary kami: Ryujin, Susanoo, and Amaterasu. The shrine's architecture reflects its origins during the Nara period, with a traditional Japanese garden and a wooden gate adorned with the torii symbol. Visitors can explore the shrine grounds, which also feature several historical buildings and artifacts from the region.

Cultural notes

Sanjo-ya is famous for its beautiful cherry blossom viewing area during spring. The shrine also hosts a biennial festival in May to celebrate the arrival of summer and honor the three primary kami.

Historical note

Founded in 712 CE during the Nara period, Sanjo-ya was originally built as a branch of the Toshogu Shrine in Zao, Tochigi Prefecture.
