Located in the heart of Sapporo, Hokkaido's largest city,札幌南沢神社 is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the deity of prosperity and good fortune. The shrine's history dates back to the early Heian period (794-1185 CE), making it one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Hokkaido. 札幌南沢神社 is connected to the legend of the founding of Sapporo. According to local lore, the shrine's primary deity, Hachiman Okami, was said to have revealed a dream to the city's founder, Owadate no Mikoto, which led to the establishment of the city.

The shrine was originally built as a smaller shrine but gained prominence after being visited by Emperor Meiji in 1900.
