Kawa no Yu Shinsha, or Kawaragyu Shrine, is a Shinto shrine located in the scenic town of Sapporo, Hokkaido. The shrine is dedicated to the water god, Otohime, and is famous for its beautiful vermilion torii gate, which has become an iconic symbol of Sapporo. The shrine complex includes several shrines and temples, as well as a museum showcasing the region's rich history and culture.

Visitor tip
Visit the shrine during cherry blossom season (March-April) for a stunning display of vibrant blooms along the Kaminokuni River that flows through the shrine complex.
Cultural notes
Kawaragyu Shrine is famous for its association with Otohime, the goddess of the sea and water. According to Shinto mythology, Otohime is said to have descended from the heavens to earth, bringing fertility and abundance to the land. The shrine's torii gate is adorned with carvings depicting Otohime riding a dragon, symbolizing her power over the ocean.
Historical note
The shrine was originally built in 1886 as a Shinto temple dedicated to the goddess Otohime, but its current structure dates back to 1954.
