Ishikawa

Anatagū Jinja is a Shinto shrine located in the town of Katsuyama, Ishikawa Prefecture. The shrine is dedicated to Fujin, the god of wind and storms, as well as Hachiman, the god of war. The shrine's architecture reflects its historical significance as a major stopping point along the old Tokaido highway. Visitors can experience the serene atmosphere of the shrine's gardens and traditional buildings.

Visitor tip

Visit the shrine during the annual Higashi Katsuyama Matsuri festival in October for a traditional yamabiko ( mountain sake) tasting experience at one of the many food stalls.

Cultural notes

The shrine's design is reminiscent of traditional Edo-period architecture, reflecting its history as a major commercial center. Anatagū Jinja is also notable for its connections to the mythological figure of Fujin, who is often depicted as a powerful storm god.

Historical note

Established in 1187, Anatagū Jinja was originally dedicated to Fujin but later came to be enshrined with Hachiman in 1588.
