南大谷 天神社

Located in the heart of Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, Naitō-dai-gū Tennōsha is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the goddess of mercy and wealth. Dedicated to the deity Amaterasu Ōmikami, the primary kami enshrined at the shrine, it is also believed to be inhabited by a multitude of other local deities known as 'yokai'. The shrine's architecture reflects traditional Japanese design, with a wooden torii gate adorned with vermilion paper lanterns. Visitors can explore the shrine's serene gardens and peaceful walking paths, creating a tranquil atmosphere reminiscent of ancient Japan.

Visitor tip

To fully appreciate the shrine's beauty, visit at dawn or dusk when the setting sun casts a warm glow over the vermilion torii gate.

Cultural notes

Naitō-dai-gū Tennōsha is believed to be the site where the famous Japanese legend of ' Urashima Taro' is connected, with the shrine's main hall said to resemble the shape of a boat from which Taro sailed to the underwater kingdom of Ryujin.

Historical note

The current structure dates back to the Meiji period (1868-1912), although the site has been occupied by religious institutions since the Heian period (794-1185).
