Located in the heart of Sapporo, Hokkaido's largest city, Kozu-Han no Shinshin-jinja is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of winter, Kozu-Han no Kami. The shrine's architecture is typical of Hokkaido's unique blend of Japanese and indigenous Ainu influences. Built in 1898, the shrine has undergone several renovations while maintaining its traditional design.

Cultural notes

Kozu-Han no Kami is associated with the protection of crops and livestock from harsh winter conditions. At this shrine, visitors can also honor the goddess of fertility, Himiko no Ōkami.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt after being destroyed during the Russo-Japanese War.
