The Ikku Temple, dedicated to the Buddhist deity of compassion, Guanyin (Kannon in Shinto mythology), is a prominent landmark in Nishitsunomiya-cho, Shimane Prefecture. As part of the Ikku Temple complex, the Observatory and the shrine are said to be built on the site where two brothers fell into the nearby river. The primary deity enshrined here is Jikaku Bodaiji, however other kami are also present including Shishi. Observers see both Buddhist and Shinto customs being practiced.

Cultural notes
The Ikku Temple complex is associated with the legend of two brothers who were turned into stone statues after being killed by a dragon. The Shinto deity Jikaku Bodaiji is said to have been revered here for centuries, and is often depicted alongside Buddhist deities such as Kannon.
