Kanagawa

Dayo Shrine, located in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of fire and iron, Hinokami. The shrine's architecture reflects its historical significance as a major stop on the famous Nakasendo highway during the Edo period. Visitors can experience the traditional Japanese atmosphere within the shrine's beautifully landscaped gardens.

Cultural notes

Dayo Shrine is also famous for its unique architectural feature - the 'iron god' statue of Hinokami. The statue is adorned with ironwork from the Edo period and is said to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck.

Historical note

The shrine was originally built in the Heian period (794-1185 CE), but it has undergone several reconstructions and renovations, particularly after the devastating earthquake of 1923.
